Constructive powers
Precisely because the domain of practice that brings social workers together with youths in care is intimate, personal, and private, the content of that discussed in interviews is potentially quite upsetting and unsettling. Although in the previous segment we encountered a social worker who dealt with potential conflict by laughing it off, more skilled workers are prepared to invite youth in care to be critical of child welfare services, and in so doing create a space for authentic expression of feeling, to thereby work through difficult life issues. Of course, such invitations are inherently dangerous as they may lead to not only criticism of child welfare services, but criticism of colleagues and even the social worker conducting the interview himself or herself. Yet by inviting youths to be critical, and allowing them to explore their feelings about child welfare, social workers also create an opportunity that allows them to provide re-interpretations of accounts that help youth to reframe and to make new sense of their lives.
Y: So these people who were around you when you came into care did they/ how did they affect you, did they help you, did they harm yu/ do you feel they harmed you, any//
S: At that time I was feeling they were harming me because I wasnât really used to that kinda invasion, just come in and kinda you know. Ah, I didnât understand why, cause I thought that was normal for me, I didnât know that wasnât normal=
Y: =the okay
S: but ah, I though ah, what the hell are they doing, you know? Like, just come in here kinda you know, like fine, my momâs consent that I should go, you know.
Y: Your mom was consenting?
S: yah, surely
Y: So did you, you were, you said earlier you were confused by the ah, the whole process and now your saying uhm that also you felt that people were, at that time you felt people were wanting to harm you, uhm, thatâs a pretty scary situation then.
S: yah
Y: did you ask? Do you remember if you ask any peo/ anybody what was happening?
S: uhm.
Y: be/btes/well you were pretty young eh?
S: yah, but I/I didnât really ask, I jj/jist was angry a lot, you know. I was jist ah, got really angry, and ah, fight back and jist not listen.
Y: Did anybody ever try to understand? yu/yu//[there were alota issues]
S: [I think alota] people did, they tried to understand but ah//
Y: did they try to make you understand though, did pee/people explain what was happening to you? . .
S: They, they did, they did I, in in certain ways, like..
Y: In a way that you could understand=
S: =not really=
Y: =not really, eh=
S: =it was too hard for me to understand=
Y: =uh huh
S: really, the way. I, I still wouldnât have understood anyway. Like its kinda hard to understand when somebody is taking you out of your house=
Y: =yah
S: like so what you know. But I donât know. I didnât really get to understand it perfect .
